Polygon is moving to a Proof-of-Stake (POS) network. It is designed to address scalability challenges within the Ethereum ecosystem. It operates as an EVM-compatible Layer-2 (L2) scaling solution for Ethereum, enhancing its throughput while also significantly bringing down gas costs, i.e., transaction fees.
For the migration, you may need to adjust your tokens depending on the blockchain you're using. Some chains might require minimal changes, while others could involve a few additional steps.
- If you hold tokens on ETH or the zkEVM, you will need to migrate your MATIC to POL.
- If you hold MATIC on the Polygon POS chain, you will only need to update the token symbol in your wallet.
*There is not a deadline to migrate assets.
ETH/ zkEVM
- Visit the Polygon Portalâs migration page: https://portal.polygon.technology/pol-upgrade.
- Connect
- Approve the migration action by granting the upgrade contract permission to access your MATIC tokens.
- Perform the migration action to receive POL in your wallet.
MATIC on Polygon
If your MATIC tokens are stored in your wallet on the Polygon PoS chain, you wonât need to manually migrate them â theyâll be automatically converted to POL at a 1:1 ratio.
However, youâll need to update the native token symbol in your walletâs network settings. If the token symbol isnât updated, the wallet may continue to display MATIC as the token name instead of POL.
- Open your wallet
- Go to Settings, then Networks, select Polygon
- Change the Currency symbol from MATIC to POL, and save. (It prompted me with a suggested ticker change, it was easy)
If you are using another wallet (Trust, Magic Eden, etc) this process may vary, but should be close to the same process.
